Competition Information
How to enter an essay

Each school is allowed to enter one pupil's essay into the competition, with no exceptions. The essay and accompanying documents must be entered by a teacher at the school and not by the pupil.

Science/Technology/Maths/History/English teachers may decide to get everyone in Year 8 and 9 to write an essay and then they could pick the best one to represent the school. If they decide not to do this, then a student should approach the relevant teacher or head themselves and request that they enter their essay on behalf of the school. If several students are interested in submitting an essay, then the head or relevant teacher must decide which essay to submit on behalf of the school.

Once the essay is chosen, and is in the correct format (see Rules for writing the essay) without the pupil's name and without the school's name, the entry form must be completed in full and signed by the pupil and the submitting teacher. This form was included in the original pack sent to the Head Teacher. It can also be downloaded from http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/essay2009/entryform.pdf.

The chosen pupil should also fill out the questionnaire included in the original pack sent to the Head Teacher. It can also be downloaded from http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/essay2009/questionnaire.pdf. This questionnaire allows us to get the general views of pupils on how women are perceived in STEM.

As well as submitting the entry form and the questionnaire, THREE hard copies of the essay should also be submitted. If possible the essay should also be burned onto a CD. A blank CD was enclosed with the pack sent to the Head Teacher. The pupil and school’s names should be written on the CD envelope (but not while the CD is in the envelope!). The electronic file on the CD should be called pupil's surname_school's name.doc so for example Bloggs_StMarys.doc.
