Research Interests
I am currently using functional MRI to explore brain responses during different language tasks in both healthy subjects and patients. I am particularly interested in the characterisation of functional inter-individual variability in terms of regional activations, lateralised patterns and interacting networks. My aim is to decode functional variability and identify reliable functional landmarks that can inform us about the different degenerate systems and strategies used by subjects when performing a particular language task. To do that, I am using connectivity methods to assess inter-regional interactions between language subsystems. I am also implementing new approaches for the identification of atypical functional responses, particularly useful for characterising subject-specific patterns or for comparing heterogeneous populations of patients to healthy subjects.
My main interest concerns the following key concepts:
- Effective connectivity analyses in multiple language tasks (e.g. DCM).
- Mapping laterality at high spatial definition.
- Characterizing inter-individual functional variability.
- Degenerate systems during word reading.
- Lesion-symptom mapping to link abnormal structure with atypical behaviour.
- Automated methods for lesion identification.
I have also been working on:
- Similarity measures and clustering of individual functional maps.
- Functional and structural MRI in the newborn.
- Global and local processing in the visual system.
